Workshop: AI for Energy Networks

16th January – University of Bath (in-person)

Motivation:

The transition to net zero is driving a rapid transformation of the energy sector, driven by renewable generation, low carbon technologies, and data and digitalisation. Energy networks play a vital role in our energy systems by transporting energy through time and space from generation to consumption. The transformation of the energy sector comes with emerging opportunities and threats that directly impact energy networks. This workshop will explore the role AI technologies could play in this transition, for example by enhancing grid resilience, optimising asset management, and improving forecasting accuracy.

Aims:

By bringing together experts from across Energy Networks and AI to share knowledge and discuss challenges together, this workshop aims to:

  • Build a community of Energy Networks and AI experts.
  • Define promising challenges in Energy Networks that can be addressed with existing AI techniques.
  • Identify gaps in existing AI capabilities required to unlock future high-impact applications in Energy Networks.

Objectives:

This workshop will identify promising challenges in Energy Networks, and assess their suitability for AI approaches, informing the longer-term AI for Energy Networks research agenda.

The discussions and output of this workshop will inform a position paper addressing:

  • Current AI approaches and existing applications to Energy Networks.
  • Problems in Energy Networks that could be addressed with current AI tools.
  • Gaps in current AI capabilities that would open-up more problems in Energy Networks.
