Flexible Funding: New Entrants to Energy Networks Community
We invite New Entrants to the Energy Networks Community from UK Higher Education Institutions (UKHEIs) for innovative projects that explore novel applications of mathematics, data science, and artificial intelligence within the context of Energy Networks.

Call Overview


- A total fund of £200k is available
- Maximum award for any individual project = £100k
- Project Investigators (PI) must be based at a UK Higher Education Institute (HEI)
- Successful awards to start September 2025 and run for maximum 12months
- Outputs will include a final report and presentation at the Supergen Energy Networks Hub Annual Conference
- We particularly welcome proposals from individuals or teams who have not previously applied their research in the Energy Networks sector
To submit your application you will need to email Letters of Support (3x maximum) (where applicable) and Proposal to Lindsey Allen and complete the PI Application form
The proposal document is available to download and includes:
- Case for Support (1000 words) include a simple workplan (as a table or figure)
- Justification of Resources (400 words)
- Coinvestigators (300 words)
- External Partners (300 words)
- Data Management Plan (200 words)
- Scope & Priority Areas
We particularly welcome proposals from individuals or teams who have not previously worked in the Energy Networks sector. For the purposes of this call, this refers to researchers whose prior work has not been directly applied to Energy Networks or funded by an Energy Networks-related body.
Projects may address one or more of the following themes:
- Risk and Resilience in Energy Networks
- Innovative Uses of Publicly Available Data, especially large datasets
- Application of mathematics not currently applied to Energy Networks, in pursuit of Net Zero
- Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques to understand, model, or manage complexity and vulnerability within energy systems
We encourage proposals that seek to leverage advanced techniques, including AI, machine learning, and novel analytical methods, to address pressing challenges in energy networks.
Interdisciplinary and cross-cutting proposals that span multiple themes are welcome.
Assessment Process


- Applicants must be based in a UK Higher Education Institution eligible to hold EPSRC awards (Find out if you can apply for funding – UKRI)
- Deadline for application submission is 20th June 2025
- Individuals may submit no more than one proposal as Principal Investigator, and no more than two in total including Co-Investigator submissions to this call
Applications will be reviewed by members of the Impact Advisory Committee who will review, make comments and score the proposal against set criteria which will include:
- Overall quality and fit with the call outline and fit with the SEN Hub
- Appropriateness of the methods and approaches proposed
- Value for money for the expected research outcomes
- The strength of the research team, including non-academic partners
- The fit to real-world challenges
- ED&I considerations embedded within your proposal
